I developed my first rudimentary websites in 1995. In 1999 I began business writing; creating business letters, promotions, and information packets to promote the business that I was managing and to provide extra value to my customers. In the year 2000 I launched my first e-commerce site. The world of marketing has had a grip on me for a long time.
Over the course of my life I have worked in retail, technical support, sales, and management roles. I have invested time and money in expanding my understanding of marketing, writing, and sales to better serve my clients and provide the most value possible to my clients and employers.
In 2005 I began selling my services as a freelancer, and I feel very lucky that the work I have produced has been sought after and received so well. In 2008 I began actively promoting my writing and marketing business, and in 2009 I left my full-time job to operate my own marketing consultancy. Providing copywriting and marketing services, I have done work for clients on five continents (North America, South America, Australia, Asia, and Europe); I have a dream of one day producing work for all 7 continents.
I have been fortunate that I am able to make my living doing what I love – helping businesses and business owners promote themselves. To do this, I have created work such as biographies, brochures and flyers, business letters, sales scripts, newsletters, PowerPoint presentations, speeches, articles, and blog posts. I have worked on and directed marketing campaigns that include print, outdoor, radio, and television. Perhaps my greatest successes have come from the world of digital marketing, however. Online marketing is a true passion of mine, and I love developing comprehensive campaigns that leverage SEO, content marketing, paid advertising, and social media.
I am also a marketing measurement addict. Just how many people did that campaign reach? How can I figure out how many people were influenced by this newspaper ad? How can I get more retweets?
On the writing side I have been published in several magazines, written a sidebar for a book on parenting, and have been interviewed for podcasts and as a source for books and magazine articles. As a marketer I have been rewarded by podcasts, print media, radio, and more.
I love the opportunities that social media and online marketing bring. However, I also understand the power of traditional marketing, and believe that both types of marketing work best when paired with each other. It is amazing how an effective direct mail letter can drive business, just as a great YouTube video can help to boost the bottom line.
In 2013 I left my consultancy behind and began working full-time for a provincial tourism destination. My new role provides the opportunity to continue to learn and to participate in long-term campaigns and really measure the effectiveness of marketing initiatives that play out over months and years. It is a fantastic position with an amazing organization, and I am truly blessed to be where I am today.
